45° is a proposition by Bertrand Cavalier, Fabien Silvestre Suzor et Massao Mascaro that started as a Carte Blanche for the inauguration of the Biennale de la Photographie de Mulhouse in 2018.
The installation is a reflection on image, its status, and its perception within society.
From the prisme of the photography camera to the usual angle of the handling of a smartphone, this angle of 45 degrees takes part of the possibility of image and its popularity.
The exhibition was an installation made of 42 steel stands. On the stand’s tips, were printed images scattered around the space of a historical Church. In addition, a poster displayed in the space was printed in 300 copies and was made available to the public. The poster had a mirror finish and showed the entire body of images.
We thought of the installation as an obstacle made of images in order to push the visitor to move in a nonlinear walk.
These images are a free selection from the entire archive of our mobile phone photographs. We started wondering about these images’ status which constituted for us a parallel production in our photographic practice.
As photographers, we deal with visual material on a daily basis. Facing the constant flow of images, on social media networks or on our personal devices, we started considering this side production of images as a
short-circuit in our artistic practices.
